European furniture in the German Biedermeier style, such as the desk shown here, was made between 1815 and 1848 during a period of political stability and growing urbanization and industrialization that gave rise to a new middle class. Biedermeier furniture is characterized by simplified designs of the French Empire and Directoire styles as well as certain 18th-century English styles.
The desk shown here represents middle to late Biedermeier design with its heralding of historicism and revival eras long sought for in the ornate gold painted Egyptian motifs.
